How Not to Diet by Dr. Michael Greger-(a plant based doctor)- is one of the most enlightening books I’ve read on nutrition and weight loss! As someone who’s always looking for ways to improve my health while being mindful of animal welfare, I found this book both informative and practical.
Dr. Greger does an excellent job of breaking down the science behind weight loss, but what I truly appreciated was his evidence-based approach, which isn’t about quick fixes or fad diets—it’s about long-term, sustainable health. 💚🥗

A few chapters really stood out to me:
I particularly liked Chapter 5, where Dr. Greger talks about the power of whole plant foods in reducing hunger! The way he explains how high-fibre, low-calorie foods can not only fill you up but also help you lose weight was a real eye-opener. It made me reconsider how I approach meals. I'm going to start focusing on nutrient-dense, fibre-rich meals that fuel my body and make me feel fuller for longer, without the added stress of calorie-counting.

Another chapter that really struck me was Chapter 7, which dives into the importance of green leafy vegetables. I already knew they were good for me, but Dr. Greger’s insights into how dark leafy greens support metabolism and protect against chronic disease were fascinating. It definitely made me want to start growing more kale and chards so i can add more greens to my meals! 🥬

The most interesting takeaway for me was the concept of "food as medicine". We all know how eating a healthy diet can actively prevent and even reverse disease; but this book reminded me that every food choice i eat throughout the day is either prolonging my life or shortening it!

How Not to Diet isn’t just another weight loss book, it reads as a comprehensive guide to improving your health with the power of food. I found it inspiring, educational, and totally in line with my values of compassionate, plant-based living.

Highly recommend it to anyone looking to make meaningful changes in their diet and lifestyle!

This lead me to finding Ariel Bolloso who's a raw food nutritionalist. In August I eventually went full raw vegan eating only fruit, veggies, nuts and seeds, and you can make so much just using these ingredients with a blender and a processor. I've lost a stone and a half so far but it would have been two stone if I hadn't binged on processed stuff and alcohol for a week over Christmas. I'm now back at it and working my way back down again. I find it's the easiest 'diet' I've ever been on in terms of sticking to it. I won't say I don't have days where I have to exercise more will power, but I see it as my long term health pension, so it's more about my health in old age that I'm working on (I'm 60 this year). I feel healthier and fitter in this short time, but I know that's only going to improve. You're detoxing on decades of bad eating so it's going to take time to bring yourself up to maximum health.
